ADAPTING A CHINESE FOLK DANCE
Leung cha (“cooling tea”) has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of ailments, on top of quenching thirst in the humid southern provinces like Guangdong. This provided inspiration for Grace Ooi, when she was tasked to choreograph a number for Phor Tay’s dance club. “I was pregnant at the time and I was always thirsty,” said Ooi, a full-time dance instructor.
“I was spending a lot of time in cafés too, and I thought, how about a dance about brewing a pot of herbal tea?”
