1985 WAS a memorable year for many. Malaysia was then an "Asian Tiger" with its own newly launched national car, Asia's tallest building was about to be completed (Komtar in Penang) and the world's third longest bridge was unveiled. When the iconic Penang Bridge was opened to the public in 1985 it marked an important milestone in Malaysia's economic development, linking the mainland with the Free Trade Zone on the island.
More importantly, the bridge was a symbol of pride and the "can-do" spirit of the times, especially as it was completed in only three and a half years, with its construction costs RM100mil under budget. Penang Economic Monthly pays tribute to this engineering marvel that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
