DURING MY TALK at Penang Institute on Penang Nyonya Cuisine — Past, Present & Future, I elaborated on our intangible cultural heritage’s characteristics and preservation. Part and parcel of it include archiving old Nyonya cookbooks and recipes, especially those from Penang — and I am glad Penang lnstitute has agreed to set up a repository in their Penang Studies Research Centre to do just that.

The objective of collecting a diversity of old traditional recipes of Penang Nyonya dishes is so that researchers can understand the evolution of these dishes over the years, and, possibly, help to establish their origins. Many of them are evolutions from traditional recipes of Malay, Hokkien, Thai and other ethnic groups. Hence, we also want recipes and cookbooks stemming from these heritages.
