Traversing South-East Asia’s Fractured Literary Landscape

Minh Bui Jones’ life is very much tied to words and his South-East Asian roots. Born in Vietnam, he migrated to Australia in 1978 where he began his media career. After a three-year stint in television, Bui Jones ventured into reporting for the Sydney Morning Herald. He also co-founded several magazines, including The Diplomat, a bi-monthly foreign affairs publication, in 2001.

He later moved to Thailand to work as a news editor for Asia Times Online and then to Cambodia as a freelance journalist. It was there that he launched his fourth magazine, the quarterly Mekong Review, during the Kampot Readers and Writers Festival in 2015.

Today, the publication is well-regarded as the bastion of free speech for many South- East Asian writers.
