Building Batu Kawan Brick by Brick

Sounds of piling echo through this huge area that is to become the new developmental centre for Penang, and the country.

The vast and vacant territory of Batu Kawan – formerly a backwater – is now buzzing with activity and anticipation. It lies at the start of the Second Penang Bridge (officially known as the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge) which opened just over a year ago.

At the other end of the bridge is Batu Maung, which lies just by the island’s airport. The massive RM4.5bil bridge thus connects strategic locations, the plan being to turn Batu Kawan into the state’s next business and development metropolis.

However, dreaming up and planning a new residential and industrial nerve centre is one thing, creating it is something else.
