The book opens on a whimsical note as Flower sets the scene for the arrival of the British led by Captain Francis Light, with plenty of references to earlier seafarers such as Admiral Cheng Ho and James Lancaster. Flower's enthusiasm and great knack for storytelling makes it easy for the reader to go along with his narration.
