The Path Not Taken

The Path Not Taken
Saw Sue-Mae.

What happens when you put necessity before passion? The high achievers who brought prestige to Penang in their younger days and then chose other pursuits tell their stories.

The movies all end the same way.

The athlete whose journey we’d been following raises her hands in triumph at the finish line, the audience rises in a standing ovation to celebrate the performer on stage or a team raises a trophy in victory amidst loud cheers and jubilation. The picture freezes and fades and viewers get up from their seats filled with feelings of inspiration and contentment that everything went right in the end.

But what happens after some goals are achieved and some public recognition clinched? How long can young stars continue with their passion? How do young stars move on when they are at a point where they know they could have developed further but decide that they have to be practical? They may close that violin case, hang up that karate gi or pack those chess pieces away, but then what?

Three stars who earned fame for their home state of Penang in their youth show us that doing something you love is never a waste. Nor is it something you ever truly leave behind.
