Home-schooling – An Applauded Option

Apart from public and private schools, there’s another mode of education in Malaysia that’s growing steadily.

National schools were once the first choice most Malaysian parents made for their children. Today, it seems that things have changed radically. More and more parents are swerving off the mainstream schooling route. Those who can afford it are sending their children either to a private or an international school. Others opt for vernacular schools.

However, in recent years, home-schooling has been a growing trend.

One little-known fact: the home-schooling movement, as a legal alternative form of education, was brought into Malaysia over 20 years ago. But it was not until recently that the concept started to gain momentum. A rough estimate made by industry insiders on Malaysian homeschoolers states that there are about 3,000 to 5,000 home-schoolers throughout the country, and the majority are notably primary school-level children1; primary education for all children between ages 7 and 12 is compulsory in Malaysia.
